A visionary journey through the spirit of Japanese craftsmenship

Credits:

This advertisement highlights the stunning and diverse artwork of Japan that inspired Louis Vuitton's ongoing partnership with Japanese craftsmen and artists. The video highlights this discovery, from the integral patterns, inspired by classical Japanese iconography to modern collaborations.

Even today, artists like Kusama and Murakami have made global movements in partnership with Louis Vuitton which this video serves to demonstrate and reflect on.

Lessons Learned

Everything about this video had to be grand. We needed clever transitions and large explosions, which was a challenge to pull off but very worth it in the end!

Paris City Book

The Paris skyline and a hot air balloon

A tour through the history of Paris, from its founding to the Olympics

Credits:

This promo highlights the diverse culture, architecture, and people found in Paris that truly bring it to life. This promo was animated entirely by me from storyboard to final delivery with creative direction by Manuel Barenboim at Motion Principles.

This project played a lot with depth and character, trying to get the most out of the flat timeline perspective. Through 3D camera moves and dynamic transitions guided by the balloon, this project is able to feel more alive and memorable.

Pacing is critical in short ads like these to highlight important moments. Stopping felt too slow, so we instead slowed the camera and panned forward to make sure each tableau was legible.

Travel Book Amsterdam

July 2024

A shipyard of boat workers
A row of bikes leaning against a building wall

A line-by-line guide through the sites of Amsterdam

This promo followed my work on Paris but was quite different. Instead of clean vectored, the artwork was sketchy and tactile. Thus, the animation utilized a similar hand-drawn feel.

By using a leading line, we carry the viewer through the sites of the city from the packed shipyards to the bustling train stations. The drawn line were the most consistent element of this video which connected shots together and made the city feel unified.

To create a convincing transition, motion can be used to mask away hidden cuts and sound design can make the trick even more convincing to the viewer.

Travel Book Indonesia

Indonesian culture immersed through brush strokes.

For Indonesia, I was primarily responsible for small animations while timing and construction were handled by Manu directly. Thus, I got to put a lot more attention and detail into how these images would deconstruct and move.

My favorite part of this video is the woman playing the gambang
which with sound design added gives satisfying feedback. We also used various brush strokes to create a sense of meticulousness to the painter's actions.

Lessons Learned

We used a lot of mixed media techniques for this project including filming actual brush strokes and then importing those to After Effects and using those as masks. This helped sell the painter effect even more.
